For over 40 years, I, as a senior pastor, believed that evangelical Christians should align themselves with the Republican Party due to shared morals, values, and biblical principles. I supported issues like Texas’ ban on same-sex marriage and the GOP’s pro-life stance on abortion. However, my views have shifted, and I now support Vice President Kamala Harris, a Democrat, for president.
While I still hold firm to my beliefs in traditional marriage and protecting life in the womb, the Republican Party has changed in ways that no longer align with my values. The party’s nomination of Donald Trump, a man with a history of adultery, lying, and criminal activity, goes against the principles I hold dear. I cannot support a party that endorses such behavior.
As a pastor who has made hiring decisions based on character, I see Kamala Harris as a candidate worthy of leadership. Her background, integrity, and commitment to her family and community make her a trustworthy individual. In contrast to Trump’s controversial track record, Harris presents herself as a person of good character who can be relied upon.
The events of Jan. 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol, where Trump’s rhetoric incited chaos and violence, highlight the dangers of following a leader who promotes division and unrest. In contrast, Harris has demonstrated a commitment to unity and respect for all individuals. Her leadership style and values make her a suitable candidate for the presidency.
In light of these considerations, I urge fellow evangelicals to carefully assess the character and actions of political candidates before casting their votes. While party loyalty may have been a guiding factor in the past, it is essential to prioritize the values and integrity of the individuals seeking office. As a pastor and a voter, I believe that supporting leaders who embody respect, integrity, and compassion is crucial for the well-being of our nation.
