Despite his lack of vaccination against the corona virus, Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic still hopes to start at the US Open. The last Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season begins on August 29 in New York. “I’m preparing as if I have permission to play along while waiting to see if there’s any room for me to travel to the US. Fingers crossed, ”wrote the Serb on Twitter on Saturday.
The 35-year-old is on the entry list for the tournament. However, the organizers have emphasized that they respect the US entry regulations regarding the corona virus. It is therefore still open whether Djokovic will be allowed to start in Flushing Meadows. With a few exceptions, vaccination against the corona virus is still a prerequisite for entering the country.
After winning his seventh title at the grass classic in Wimbledon, Djokovic had confirmed that he was not planning to be vaccinated against the virus and was hoping for an exemption. Djokovic has won a total of 21 Grand Slam tournaments, just one fewer than Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the top four events.
