(OTTAWA) The Innu still face a “very intransigent” Quebec to negotiate their modern Peace of the Braves, Minister Marc Miller denounced Thursday. Quebec’s silence disturbs the leaders of the three Innu communities of the Regroupement Petapan who were waiting for its counter-proposal on March 31.
The Innu have succeeded in reaching an agreement with the federal government, but the contribution of Quebec is still lacking to finalize the agreement. Talks have been going on for 40 years and a deal seemed within reach.
The Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations deplored the Quebec government’s lack of will. The Innu want an economic agreement that would include a 500 megawatt energy block and the obligation for forestry companies to agree with them when exploiting ancestral lands.
More details to come.
