The humanitarian crisis in Sudan is worsening dramatically, and refugees are fleeing in droves.
According to “Welt”, the crisis in Sudan is reaching frightening proportions. Fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has led to mass displacement and a severe humanitarian emergency. The United Nations speaks of a crisis of “epic proportions” and one of the “worst humanitarian disasters in modern history”.
According to reports in “Welt”, at least 15,000 deaths have been recorded so far. The number of children under five and mothers suffering from acute malnutrition has risen to 4.9 million, according to the WHO.
Medical care in Sudan has also been severely affected. Many doctors have had to flee, leaving behind a gap in care that cannot be filled.
In addition, almost nine million people have been displaced within the country, a higher number than in any other recent war. Many also flee to neighboring Chad or Europe.
The European security authorities are also watching the increasing number of migrants from Sudan using the Mediterranean route with concern. The EU border agency Frontex registered 6,931 Sudanese in 2023, which, although only two percent of all arrivals in the EU, represents a six-fold increase compared to the previous year.
