The Bible as a ‘Love Letter’: Pope Francis’ Preface for Fr. James Martin’s Book
Pope Francis has penned a preface for the Italian version of “Come Forth: The Promise of Jesus’s Greatest Miracle,” a book by Jesuit Fr. James Martin. Originally released in the U.S. in September 2023, Martin’s book delves into the resurrection of Lazarus, which he considers “Jesus’s greatest miracle.” The pope’s preface not only highlights the book’s themes but also offers insights into his theological and pastoral perspectives.
In an interview with NCR, Martin expressed his surprise and gratitude for the pope’s unexpected preface. He described it as a guide on how to read the Bible, extending beyond the Lazarus story.
Francis titled his preface “All of us are Lazarus,” praising Martin for bringing the biblical text to life. He emphasized the metaphor of Lazarus representing all humanity and the importance of a loving relationship with the divine to overcome death. The pope encouraged readers to view the Bible as a “love letter,” emphasizing the theme of love.
The preface also discussed the timeless relevance of the Gospel, highlighting Christianity’s blend of the eternal and the contemporary. Francis drew parallels between literature and theology, referencing Cormac McCarthy’s views on forgiveness in connection with God’s nature.
Reflecting on life and death, Francis quoted Italian Bible scholar Fr. Alberto Maggi, emphasizing the message that the living do not truly die. He concluded by underscoring the book’s message of leaving behind what restricts freedom to embrace new life, resonating with readers’ experiences of personal growth and renewal.
