Malawi Vice-President Saulos Chilima passed away at the age of 51 after a military aircraft he was flying in crashed in a forest in the country. He had served as vice-president for nine years, initially selected by former President Peter Mutharika from the business sector. He was known for his strong connection with the people, especially the youth, and was seen as a charismatic and fashionable leader.
Chilima was the first Malawian to head the telecommunications firm Airtel Malawi before becoming vice-president. However, he later fell out with President Mutharika, accusing the government of not doing enough to combat corruption. Despite facing corruption allegations himself later, he continued to challenge the government and even formed his own political party, the UTM, advocating for reform in the country.
In the 2019 presidential elections, Chilima ran as the UTM candidate and came in third, with Mutharika winning. The election results were subsequently annulled due to irregularities, leading to a re-run where Chilima teamed up with Lazarus Chakwera and became vice-president after Chakwera’s victory.
Chilima’s arrest on corruption charges in 2022, which he denied, was a disappointment to many who saw him as a symbol of change and integrity. However, the charges were dropped, sparking questions about the handling of corruption cases in Malawi. Before his political career, Chilima had held senior positions in the corporate sector and was known for his work ethic and achievements.
Chilima’s spokesman described him as an intelligent and inspiring leader who had a vision for the country. Despite the challenges he faced, Chilima continued to advocate for reform and change in Malawi. He leaves behind his wife Mary and two children, Sean and Elizabeth, and his legacy as a charismatic and dedicated leader will be remembered by many in the country.
