Veteran Mel Watson, from the Hornsea branch of the Royal British Legion, has been chosen to represent East and North Yorkshire at the upcoming Festival of Remembrance in London. He will be serving as a standard bearer at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday and participating in the Remembrance Sunday parade as part of the ex-serviceman’s squad.

Mel Watson expressed his feelings of pride and honor at being selected to represent not only Hornsea but the entire county. Having served in the British Army from 1960 to 1986, with his final years as a Warrant Officer at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire, Mr. Watson brings a wealth of experience and dedication to his role.

This will be Mr. Watson’s second time representing the region at the festival, and he will have the support of his daughter Tracy Watson, who served in the RAF for 30 years. Tracy expressed her extreme pride in seeing her father carrying the standard at the event this year.

The Festival of Remembrance is scheduled to take place on Saturday with performances at 14:00 and 19:00 GMT, followed by the Remembrance Day march, also known as the Cenotaph March Past, on Remembrance Sunday. This march will include wreath-laying by members of the Royal Family, highlighting the importance of honoring and remembering all those who have served and sacrificed in conflicts throughout history.

Mr. Watson emphasized the significance of remembering not only past wars like the First and Second World Wars but also more recent conflicts that many people still vividly recall. He expressed hope that by reflecting on these events, we can strive for a future where such conflicts are avoided.

Attending events like the Festival of Remembrance and the Remembrance Day march allows individuals like Mel Watson to pay tribute to the brave men and women who have served their country. It serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those in the military and the importance of never forgetting their contributions to our freedom and security.

As we approach these solemn occasions, let us join together in honoring and remembering all those who have served and continue to serve in the defense of our nation. Their courage, dedication, and sacrifice deserve our utmost respect and gratitude.
