Nick Kyrgios, a tennis pro, said he had suicidal thoughts and that he used drugs and alcohol to get high. This is the latest of a number of athletes who have spoken out publicly about their mental health.
The 26-year old Australian has been ranked as high at No. 13 in singles, and won the Australian Open men’s doubles title. He wrote in a Thursday message on his verified Instagram account he is now “proud” to state that he has “completely turned himself around and have a completely new outlook on everything.”
Kyrgios also included a photo of himself at a tennis court, which he claimed was taken at the Australian Open three years ago.
He called it “one of my darkest periods” at that time and pointed out that the photo of his right arm shows what he called “self harm.”
I was experiencing suicidal thoughts, and was literally struggling just to get out of bed. Kyrgios stated that she was depressed, lonely, and had abused alcohol and drugs. She also wrote that she felt isolated. I felt like I couldn’t trust or talk to anyone. I was not open to sharing my feelings and refused to let my loved ones know. Instead, I tried to push myself to be positive little by little.
Kyrgios is currently ranked at 137th. He is one of the most interesting, enigmatic, and polarizing athletes his sport has to offer. Kyrgios is simultaneously incredibly talented and unorthodox on the court, and he never hesitates to voice his opinions.
This was his most candid discussion about his thoughts, struggles and new perspective.
He offered to help others.
“I understand that daily life can be exhausting and sometimes impossible. I know how you feel. It can make you feel weak or scared. It’s okay to feel this way, and you’re not the only one. “I’ve experienced those times when it seemed like positive energy vibes would never become a reality,” Kyrgios wrote. “Please don’t feel alone. If you feel like you can’t speak to anyone, I’m here.
He concluded by saying, “This life is beautiful.”
In January, Kyrgios was joined by Thanasi Kkinakis, a long-time friend, to become the first pair of Australians ever to win the Australian Open men’s doubles title.
This was only the fourth time that a pair appeared in the main draw for a major tournament for Kyrgios & Kokkinakis.
Kyrgios lost the singles match at the Australian Open to Daniil Medvedev in round 2.
Kyrgios is well-known for his booming serves as well as his ability to surprise opponents with underarm serves. He is equally likely to attempt a shot between the legs as he will to hit a 100 mph forehand. He enjoys being around people and interfacing with them. He has also been accused of not giving his best effort.
Kyrgios is a master of his game and can defeat anyone when he’s at his best. Lleyton Hewitt and Kyrgios are the only players to have won each of their initial matches against Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.
As a teenager, he was ranked 144th at Wimbledon in 2014. His Wimbledon debut in 2014 included a win against Nadal to reach the quarterfinals. Kyrgios reached the quarterfinals of the 2015 Australian Open. However, he has not been beyond the fourth round in a Grand Slam tournament.
Kyrgios was criticized for his words, and his actions.
After being fined $113,000 for eight violations at the Western & Southern Open, Ohio, he was placed under six-month probation.
He was also suspended from the Italian Open for throwing a chair and was not allowed to play in a match. He was also suspended by the ATP in 2016 for failing to try to win the Shanghai Masters and insulting fans.
