“Nearly five-years later, I still wake up in my early mornings with frightening fragments of sounds or images floating into my brain. Things I tried to block have float to the surface.”
Mel B said that she still suffers from the trauma of her marriage and is plagued by terrible flashbacks.
After 10 years of marriage, the Spice Girls star divorced Stephen Belafonte. He was accused of being emotionally and physically abusive at the time.
Stephen has denied every allegation against him with vehement conviction.
Mel spoke out in a new interview with The Sun about her struggles with the past and how she has tried to forget it.
She said that she can’t recall all the things that happened between me and my ex. Post-abuse trauma can be a lifelong experience.
“Nearly five-years later, I still wake up in my early mornings with frightening fragments of sounds or images floating into my brain. Things I tried to block have float to the surface. These things can still make it feel like I am drowning in shame, sweat, and fear.
“I had been through so much, and I was so low that I couldn’t believe my own self-esteem. Being isolated from my family, I didn’t have anyone to turn to for support so I started to use drugs and alcohol to ease my pain.”
Mel stated that she was unable to recall many of the events that occurred while writing Brutally Honest about her experiences.
She said that she was unable to recall much because of the trauma in her past relationship. “My writer had the task of putting together so many pieces from conversations with my family, friends and colleagues in order to fill in the gaps in my memory.
“To my horror, I discovered what Phoenix, my daughter, had seen.” It is horrible to know what my daughter saw.
Mel and her husband split at the end 2016 and had their divorce finalized 16 months after Mel first filed papers.
A 2018 settlement ruled Mel would have to pay PS270,000 to her ex-husband in legal fees and PS3,800 per month in child support. Both of them were also ordered to put aside funds from their $8 million LA home to help pay a tax bill.
