Anton Hofreiter is considered one of the harshest critics of the Chancellor when it comes to Germany’s Ukraine policy. Now the Green Party is upping the ante and making an outrageous accusation to Olaf Scholz. Even a Russia expert is horrified.
Anton Hofreiter is not in the opposition, but sits for the Greens – a government party – in the Bundestag. What is even more astonishing is how harshly the Green Party has been going against Chancellor Olaf Scholz since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.
Review: Shortly after the invasion of Russian troops and while Scholz was announcing his “turning point,” Hofreiter called for “more leadership” from the Chancellery. In interviews last year, he made it clear that in his opinion the “main problem” lay in the Chancellery. And a few months ago, Hofreiter settled accounts with the Chancellor on the Taurus issue and accused him of “catastrophic defeatism” and “dramatically poor communication” in a guest article in the “FAZ”.
Now Hofreiter has attacked the Chancellor again – more sharply than ever before. This is reported by the news magazine “Der Spiegel”, which accompanied Hofreiter the week before last at public events and discussions with citizens and party colleagues.
Accordingly, the Green politician commented on the “Chancellor’s strategy” during a panel discussion with an artist and a scientist in Bremen. Hofreiter: “People who deal with this say that the strategy is to always support Ukraine half-heartedly until Ukraine is ready to negotiate and give up large parts of its territory.”
According to Spiegel, Hofreiter’s incredible thesis was not contradicted in the further discussion. Rather, the Green man reiterated his thesis: “That’s what people who deal with it say. That this is the real hidden agenda.”
Hofreiter’s statements are highly explosive and instigate an outrageous accusation against the Chancellor: that Scholz only supports Ukraine pro forma and is actually acting in Moscow’s interests to bring Ukraine to the negotiating table. Even the “Spiegel” authors are horrified and write: “Not even Friedrich Merz would accuse the Chancellor of that.”
Russia expert Gerhard Mangott from the University of Innsbruck is also dismayed by Hofreiter’s statements. “It is hard to believe: a member of the governing coalition is accusing the Chancellor of a malicious strategy in the Ukraine conflict.”
Hofreiter not only accuses Scholz of being hesitant and hesitant when it comes to supplying weapons to the Ukrainian army, Mangott continued to FOCUS online: “No – he does not see behind this hesitation the prudence that the Chancellor has repeatedly invoked, but a diabolical, fraudulent strategy.”
Hofreiter is making Scholz a secret ally of Putin who is working towards Russia’s war goals, analyzes Russia expert Mangott and states: “If Hofreiter’s mistrust is so great, he would have to be the first to initiate a constructive vote of no confidence against Scholz. Maybe Hofreiter just gets away with zeal, emotion and loud noise.”
