In the struggle over the 2025 federal budget, several left-wing SPD MPs are warning Finance Minister Christian Lindner against cuts in development policy.

“We ensure security not only with our military capacities, but also with the development, stability and prosperity of our neighbors and partners around the world,” said Bundestag member Sanae Abdi to the German Press Agency. “There must be no cuts in the area of development cooperation.”

The leaders of the parliamentary left in the SPD, Matthias Miersch and Tim Klüssendorf, also attacked Lindner. The FDP politician must ask himself “whether he still has a real compass,” said Miersch. Science, business and broad sections of society are calling for investments to preserve the future, while Lindner is attacking his cabinet colleagues in a populist manner.

Klüssendorf criticized: “The Federal Finance Minister is not doing his homework and has not yet provided any ideas from his own area of responsibility.” The SPD Left wants to ensure more financial leeway through a reform of the debt brake and higher taxation of inheritances and assets.
