Eric Review – A Masterful Performance by Benedict Cumberbatch in this Original Drama

In a rare sighting of true originality, Netflix presents “Eric,” a six-part series written by Abi Morgan and starring Benedict Cumberbatch. The show follows genius puppeteer Vincent, the creative mind behind a children’s show called “Good Day Sunshine.” When Vincent’s son Edgar goes missing, he becomes convinced that bringing to life the puppet Edgar had been working on will lead his son back home.

The show introduces a 7ft-tall puppet named Eric, voiced by Cumberbatch, who follows Vincent as a manifestation of his hopes, fears, guilt, and declining mental health. While much of the focus has been on Cumberbatch’s dual role, the show delves into themes of addiction, grief, corruption, and societal issues in 1980s New York.

Vincent’s unraveling mental state, strained marriage, and personal demons take center stage, alongside the story of NYPD detective Michael Ledroit, a Black gay man caring for his dying partner. As the series unfolds, it tackles a myriad of complex issues with a stellar cast delivering powerful performances.

Cumberbatch’s portrayal of Vincent’s descent into despair is sure to be recognized with awards, but Belcher’s performance as Detective Ledroit is equally impressive. The series begins with a strong start, but as the multitude of plotlines and themes unfold, it begins to lose focus, leaving some characters underdeveloped.

Despite its ambitious scope, “Eric” remains a captivating watch, with standout performances and a deep exploration of human emotions and societal challenges. Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal and the show’s intricate storytelling make it a must-watch for fans of compelling drama.
