The government of Croatia has recently announced its plans to purchase lethal drones from Turkey in a deal worth 86 million euros ($91 million). This decision comes shortly after a parliamentary committee supported the acquisition of US-made rocket systems. The procurement of six Bayraktar TB2 drones, along with necessary equipment and expert training, is set to enhance Croatia’s defense capabilities and allow the army to effectively respond to modern threats.
Additionally, the government has initiated steps to acquire up to 50 Leopard tanks from Germany. As part of this agreement, Croatia will send some of its older tanks and military equipment to Ukraine. The letter of intent, signed by Croatian Defense Minister Ivan Anusic and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, outlines the exchange of 30 tanks, 30 combat vehicles, ammunition, and equipment to Ukraine, with their value being subtracted from the total cost of the new Leopard 2A8 tanks.
Furthermore, the procurement of eight HIMARS missile systems from the United States, valued at nearly $290 million, has been approved by the parliamentary committee for defense. This decision has been hailed as a significant milestone in enhancing the country’s artillery missile units, as stated by army chief of staff Tihomir Kundid.
In April, Croatia received the first batch of six Rafale fighter jets from France, out of the 12 that were purchased. This move further solidified Croatia’s defense capabilities as a member of both the European Union and NATO.
The strategic acquisitions of drones, missile systems, tanks, and fighter jets underscore Croatia’s commitment to strengthening its defense forces and safeguarding national security. These investments in advanced military equipment are crucial in enabling the country to adapt to evolving security challenges and effectively protect its interests both domestically and internationally. By establishing partnerships with various countries such as Turkey, the United States, Germany, and France, Croatia is enhancing its defense capabilities and fostering cooperation in the global defense arena.
