YAKIMA, Wash.- In a recent development, Yakima County Coroner Jim Curtice has found himself embroiled in a legal battle after allegedly providing false information regarding narcotics. The details of this case have been brought to light after a 68-page public records request was obtained by KIMA.
The incident dates back to August 26, when Curtice was rushed to the hospital due to a medical emergency. During a routine urine test, traces of cocaine were found in his system, but no fentanyl was detected. The following day, Curtice reached out to the Yakima Police Department claiming that he had conducted a personal urine test which revealed the presence of both cocaine and fentanyl. He recounted feeling unwell after tasting his energy drink, suspecting it had been tampered with, and subsequently seeking medical attention.
On August 28, Curtice reported finding fentanyl in his pre-workout drink and both cocaine and fentanyl in his water bottle. During subsequent interviews, he recalled being transported to the hospital in an ambulance. He speculated that he may have been targeted by someone with access to his office, specifically pointing fingers at Deputy Coroner Marshall Slight.
Authorities questioned Slight, who denied any involvement in the alleged poisoning and highlighted discrepancies in Curtice’s work practices. Slight mentioned that narcotics are frequently discovered during autopsies and expressed doubts about the credibility of Curtice’s claims.
Following a failed polygraph test on September 12, Curtice confessed to using narcotics on a regular basis, claiming he obtained them from deceased individuals to experiment with their effects. He admitted to fabricating the poisoning narrative and expressed regret for his actions.
Law enforcement officials recommended charging Curtice with providing false information, official misconduct, and tampering with evidence. The case has been handed over to the Ellensburg Prosecuting Attorney to avoid conflicts of interest, and a decision on formal charges is pending.
