The Bundesliga soccer teams Bayer Leverkusen and 1. FC Köln were surprisingly eliminated in the first round of the DFB Cup competition. Champions League participants Leverkusen lost 3: 4 (2: 3) at third division leaders SV Elversberg on Saturday. The Cologne failed at the second division leaders Jahn Regensburg 3: 4 on penalties. After 90 minutes and extra time it was 2:2 (1:2).

Second division club Hamburger SV needed the extra time to beat third division promoted Spvgg Bayreuth 3-1. In the first 90 minutes, the hosts held a 1-1 (1-0) lead. Second division team Hansa Rostock unexpectedly lost 0-1 (0-0) to the north regional league club VfB Lübeck.

Second division club 1. FC Heidenheim came to a 2-0 (0-0) win at regional division club FC Illertissen. Heidenheim’s league competitor SC Paderborn had no problems at all with the 10-0 (3-0) win at Oberliga FC Unity Wernigerode.
