Avelo Airlines made a grand entrance into Lakeland Linder International Airport, marking the first passenger flights in 12 years. The city celebrated with a water cannon salute and Mayor Bill Mutz personally greeted arriving passengers. Avelo signed a 15-year contract with the city and currently offers flights between Lakeland and New Haven, Connecticut twice a week, with plans to add more destinations in the future.
The airport underwent a $1.6 million upgrade to enhance security screening checkpoints, passenger amenities, and one-way exit lanes. Outgoing travelers checked in with purple-uniformed Avelo employees and passed through the new Transportation Security Administration checkpoint. Despite a few hiccups, the inaugural flight took off with a majority of its seats filled.
Polk County Commissioner Martha Santiago praised the passengers for making history by taking the flight, emphasizing the significance of supporting local air travel. Avelo’s head of brand and communications highlighted the airline’s commitment to convenience, affordability, and reliability for Central Florida residents. Avelo will be offering $81 one-way fares between Lakeland and Tweed-New Haven Airport for a limited time.
Looking ahead, Mayor Mutz expressed optimism that if local residents demonstrate strong demand, Avelo could expand its direct flight offerings from Lakeland to three to five destinations within a year. Currently, flights depart twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays, providing travelers with more options for air travel. The city is excited about the potential economic and travel benefits that Avelo Airlines’ presence will bring to Lakeland and the surrounding areas.
Overall, the launch of Avelo Airlines’ new flights from Lakeland Airport signifies a positive step forward in revitalizing passenger air travel in the region. With affordable fares, convenient flight schedules, and the promise of additional destinations in the future, residents and visitors alike have more options for air travel from Lakeland Linder International Airport. The city is hopeful that this partnership with Avelo will lead to increased connectivity, economic growth, and tourism opportunities for Lakeland and the surrounding communities.
