May 17th is the international day against homophobia, biphobia, interphobia and transphobia. Chancellor Olaf Scholz is also committed to this and shows on social media that he has a rainbow flag in his briefcase.

Olaf Scholz (SPD) is committed to the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). Since 2005, annual campaigns have been held on this day to draw attention to the discrimination and problems faced by people who live outside of heteronormity.

The Chancellor also supports the interests of the LGBTQIA community on the day. A short video showing the Chancellor’s famous briefcase was uploaded to his TikTok channel on Friday. This is opened and a colorful rainbow flag can be seen inside – the symbol of the community. The song “Dance You Outta My Head” by Cat Janice is playing in the background.

The Federal Chancellor team, which has been running Scholz’s channel for about five weeks, writes simply: “No to anti-queer sentiment!” In the comments, TikTok users are happy about the campaign, thank you and some even post rainbow emojis.

The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia has been celebrated all over the world for almost 20 years with actions, events and commemorations. In Germany too, the LGBTQIA community continues to be discriminated against and sometimes threatened with violence.

The attacks are increasing every year, and in 2022 more than twice as many queer people were attacked as in the previous year, according to the Association of Advice Centers for Those Affected by Right-Wing, Racist and Anti-Semitic Violence. However, the number of unreported cases is likely to be even higher, as the community’s inhibitions about contacting the police are high.

The AfD politician Björn Höcke was sentenced to a fine of €13,000 by the Halle regional court for using a banned Nazi slogan. Political expert Jürgen W. Falter doubts whether the verdict actually has the expected and desired effect.

“Steamroller”, “full post”, “train station alcoholic”: Such insults and insults are increasingly going too far for Green politicians like Annalena Baerbock and Robert Habeck. There is a hail of green criminal charges – with moderate success.
