Record Number of Candidates in Mayo Council Elections Leading to Potential ‘Vote Splintering’

Mayo County Council is set for a challenging election count process with a record-breaking 73 candidates vying for seats. The returning officer, John Condon, with almost 40 years of experience, is prepared for the task ahead.

The counting process for the local electoral areas (LEAs) in Mayo will kick off on June 8, with 30 seats up for grabs. The Royal TF Hotel will host the count, with Castlebar likely to be the first area counted due to its 19 candidates competing for six seats.

With the high number of candidates, there is a possibility of greater ‘vote splintering,’ making the counting process more complex and time-consuming. Recounts, if requested, could further delay the final results.

While the outcome of the Mayo County Council count may be revealed by Monday morning, the Midlands North-West Constituency count, overseen by Marian Chambers Higgins, may extend until Wednesday, June 12. Stay tuned for updates as the election results unfold.
