Almost every year, consumers have to adapt to new deposit regulations. New deposit prices for PET and glass bottles were only introduced in 2022.
The next big change will come from January 2024: Bottles of milk and mixed milk drinks will now also be subject to the deposit system and can be returned to the supermarket as a deposit by customers.
The result: consumers now have to bring significantly more returnable bottles back to supermarkets and discounters than before. At the same time, customers can also look forward to larger amounts on the deposit vouchers.
However, an Edeka branch is thwarting its customers’ plans. As a photo on the Reddit platform shows, the branch has posted an important notice on the deposit machines. It is unclear exactly which branch this is.
In the future, customers should take the following into account: “From an amount of five euros, we will only pay out using vouchers. “Thank you for your understanding,” the notice says.
In plain language, this means: The customer will only receive the deposit voucher in cash if the amount is less than five euros. Anything above that will be paid for with a shopping voucher from Edeka.
The post does not remain undiscovered for long on the Reddit platform. The photo has now been commented on over 300 times – and the opinions of the users all go in a similar direction.
“Such an impudence!” and “Dishonourless!” many complain in the comments. One user writes angrily: “‘Thank you for your understanding.’ But there is no understanding.”
While some recommend simply handing over the collected deposit to other supermarkets from now on (“Other supermarket. Problem solved”), others would use a trick to circumvent the branch’s regulations.
“Edeka gets 6 vouchers for 4.75 euros each. System dribbled out!” writes one user. Another would do it the same way: “Simply have the receipt issued before the five euros. Then they just have to scan 20 receipts.”
