(OTTAWA) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday that Canada will hold a ceremony to mark the coronation of King Charles III on May 6 in London.
The ceremony in Ottawa will be one of many events over two days as Canada marks the investiture of its new monarch.
Trudeau said the Canadian ceremony will recognize “the special relationship” Charles has had with Canada for more than 50 years as Prince of Wales. The Prime Minister adds that the coronation of Charles III marks “the beginning of a new chapter” in the history of Canada.
“Speeches, artistic performances and special unveilings” will be on the program for the ceremony, the statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said.
The coronation itself will take place in London on May 6, at Westminster Abbey, and will include a procession, concert at Windsor Castle and other events until May 8. The composition of the Canadian delegation that will attend the coronation in London will be announced in the coming weeks, says the Prime Minister’s Office.
A poll published this week by the firm Léger suggests that Canadians are largely indifferent to the successor of Elizabeth II. More than half of the respondents felt that this coronation represented a great opportunity for Canada to reconsider its ties with the British monarchy.
