A total of 74 suspected right-wing extremist cases have come to the attention of the Berlin security authorities in the past three years. 93 people were involved. This is the result of an investigation published on Friday, which the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution summarized in the new “Status report on right-wing extremists, Reich citizens and self-governing bodies in security authorities”. According to the report, there were reports of possible right-wing extremist activities among 860 employees of the federal and state security authorities nationwide.

“I don’t tolerate right-wing extremists in Berlin’s security authorities,” said Berlin’s Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) on Friday. “They discredit the colleagues in the police, fire brigade and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, who stand up for law and order every day, and undermine trust in the authorities.” The Senate Department for the Interior therefore “goes with all determination against any form of Right-wing extremism, racism and anti-Semitism in the Berlin security authorities”.

The management report covers the period from the beginning of July 2018 to the end of June 2021. During this time, there were indications or suspicions of links to right-wing extremism and the scene of the so-called Reichsbürger and Selbstverwalter for 93 people in Berlin. Self-governors are extremists who declare their property their own state and often refuse to pay taxes and fines.

With a total of around 26,700 employees in Berlin security authorities, this corresponds to a share of 0.35 percent, according to the Senate Department for the Interior. Most of the cases were based on allegations of politically motivated insults. The Senate Department for the Interior announced that each individual case had been examined and evaluated by the Berlin police from a criminal, labor or disciplinary point of view.

The authority had already reacted in 2020 under Spranger’s predecessor Andreas Geisel (SPD) to suspected extremist cases within the police force with an eleven-point plan. The Berlin police, the Berlin fire brigade and the Senate administration itself have appointed officers for extremism. In addition, the Berlin police have their own investigative team that deals with suspected cases of extremism within the police force.
