Ray Allen, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, was reprimanded by a federal judge for not showing up to a trial after being chosen as a juror.
U.S. District Judge Marcia Cooke said to Allen, 46, Wednesday that he had disrespected her court by failing to attend jury service. She stated that “no man nor woman is above performing this civic duty.”
Although Allen was selected to be a juror in the fatal carjacking case, he did not show up even though Cooke had delayed the trial by a day to allow him to attend the jersey retirement ceremony for former Boston Celtics teammate Kevin Garnett .
Allen spoke very little at the hearing. William McCue, his attorney, said that Allen’s absence was “a complete misunderstanding” and Allen stated that he would donate to diabetes research.
Allen was not present at the trial and he was convicted.
Allen is now a coach at a Miami private school. He played 1,300 NBA games in 18 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks SuperSonics, Celtics, and Miami Heat.
He won the 2008 NBA championships with the Celtics and the 2013 Heat. In 2013, he retired as the league’s best three-point shooter. This record has been surpassed many times. In 2018, he was elected to the Hall of Fame.
