NEW YORK — The South by Southwest Film Festival was forced to go virtual over the past two years. This March, Austin, Texas will host a largely in-person festival that will present the premieres of Donald Glover’s third season of “Atlanta,” as well as the latest from Richard Linklater, and the Sandra Bullock–Channing Tatum comedy, “The Lost City.”
SXSW released its list of 99 feature films on Wednesday, with 76 world premieres. Organizers said that all of these films will be presented in person. Online screenings will be available for badge holders of films that have chosen to screen.
The 2020 edition of SXSW was cancelled just one week before it was due to begin. Later, an online component was added. The festival was entirely virtualized last year.
“The past two years have been difficult and filled with uncharted waters for us all. Janet Pierson, SXSW’s director of film, said that there has been some innovation in creating community and how to pivot. However, she felt the most missing being able to gather people together. “We are delighted to share a bounty creative work with you all, both in-person and via virtual means, for our 29th SXSW Film Festival.”
Premieres include “Apollo 101/2: A Space Age Childhood”, Linklater’s story about a coming-of age tale that takes place in Houston 1969. It stars Jack Black, Zachary Levi, and Glen Powell.
The long-awaited debut for the third season on FX’s “Atlanta” will be closing night. After almost four years of hiatus, the first two episodes are scheduled to air March 24, after which the final episode will air.
Other premieres include “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” a party-gone-wrong slasher movie, with Amandla Strenberg, Pete Davidson, and Maria Bakalova; “The Unbearable Weigh of Massive Talent”, a Nic Cage comedy comedy”‘, and “The Unbearable weight of Massive Talent,” a Nic Cage sci-fi film starring Michelle Yeoh.
SXSW Film Festival takes place March 11-20.
