dont-miss-the-flu-vaccine-deadline-hospital-admissions-double

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a stark warning as hospital admissions due to flu have more than doubled in the past week. According to the latest data from UKHSA’s COVID-19, influenza (flu), RSV, and norovirus surveillance bulletin, hospitalizations have surged to 3.96 per 100,000 this week, up from 1.78 per 100,000 in the previous week’s report. This alarming increase highlights the urgent need for people to get vaccinated against the flu before the looming deadline.

Surge in Hospitalizations and Flu Positivity

The percentage of individuals with respiratory symptoms who tested positive for flu has also risen significantly, from 6.6% last week to 11.1% this week, based on data from the Respiratory DataMart surveillance system. Comparatively, flu is now circulating at a higher rate than the same period last year, when the positivity rate stood at 2.3%. These concerning figures emphasize the importance of taking proactive measures to prevent the spread of the flu virus.

Urgent Call for Vaccination

UKHSA experts are urging individuals who are still eligible for the flu vaccine to step forward promptly before the NHS Online Booking system closes on 20 December. Current vaccine uptake data reveals that only 36% of those under 65 years in a clinical risk group, 31.9% of pregnant women, and 71.4% of individuals aged 65 and over have received the flu vaccine this season – marking a decrease from the previous year.

Professor Susan Hopkins, Chief Medical Advisor at UKHSA, stressed the critical need for increased vaccination coverage to prevent a surge in flu cases, hospitalizations, and fatalities. She emphasized that time is of the essence, urging eligible individuals to prioritize their health and that of their loved ones by getting vaccinated as soon as possible.

Rise in RSV Cases and COVID-19 Levels

In addition to the flu surge, the UKHSA surveillance bulletin also reported a rise in Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) cases, alongside continued low levels of COVID-19 circulation. Vaccination against RSV is now available for individuals who are 28 weeks pregnant or more, as well as those aged 75-79 years. It is crucial for the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard their health during this challenging period.

As the holiday season approaches, prioritizing vaccination against the flu, RSV, and COVID-19 is essential to protect yourself and your community. Stay informed, stay safe, and take action to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses during this critical time. Remember, your health is your greatest asset – don’t miss the opportunity to safeguard it.
