India is showing its support for Brazil as they aim to create a consensus at the upcoming G20 leaders meeting. The meeting, scheduled for Nov 18-19 in Rio de Janeiro, will bring together leaders from the G20 group of developed and emerging economies, along with the African Union and European Union. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in attendance as well.

Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 sherpa, highlighted the three priorities of the Brazilian presidency for the summit: fighting against hunger and poverty, sustainable development and energy transition, and global governance reform. India has been a strong supporter of the global alliance against hunger and poverty, along with other members of the group.

India is also pushing for progress on climate finance, advocating for a significant increase in funding from “billions to trillions” of dollars to combat climate change. Additionally, India is calling for low-cost concessional financing for developing countries. However, discussions on climate issues at the summit are expected to be contentious.

Gender equality is another important issue for India, as outlined in the New Delhi Leader’s declaration. While India is pushing for progress on this front, some countries have taken a more conservative approach, creating a challenge for reaching a consensus. The G7 is advocating for “forward-looking language” on the topic.

In terms of trade, India is calling for bold reforms of the multilateral trading system, including the World Trade Organization. These reforms are seen as crucial for sustainable economic growth, economic resurgence, and creating a more inclusive and interconnected world.

The recent US election results and Donald Trump’s victory have added a layer of uncertainty to the G20 meeting. As outgoing President Joe Biden’s last major international engagement, the outcome of the summit may be influenced by Trump’s previous stances on various issues, including climate change.

India’s support for Brazil and its efforts to address key issues such as climate finance, gender equality, and trade reforms reflect its commitment to being a leader in the global arena. The upcoming G20 summit will be a crucial opportunity for world leaders to come together and work towards solutions to pressing global challenges.
