UK Met Office Issues Warning As Hay Fever Set To Hit 15 Million Brits This Week
The UK Met Department has issued a warning as hay fever is expected to affect at least 15 million residents in Britain this week. The surge in grass pollen levels is attributed to a delayed pollen bomb following weeks of rainfall. The National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit has categorized the pollen alert as extremely high, with a red warning indicating a very high risk in the South, Midlands, and Wales, particularly on sunny days with warm weather. The North is also expected to experience a high risk starting from June 3.
Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is a condition that causes sneezing, congestion, itchy nose, and watery eyes. It is triggered by allergens such as pollen, pet dander, mold, and insects, affecting a large percentage of the population. Symptoms tend to worsen during warm, humid, and windy weather when pollen counts are at their peak. The release of a pollen bomb can lead to a sudden increase in symptoms, impacting individuals with hay fever.
Experts warn that hay fever can exacerbate asthma symptoms, with at least 80% of asthma sufferers experiencing worsened conditions during this time of the year. The risk of an asthma attack is heightened as inflamed airways further swell up, causing breathing difficulties. Common signs and symptoms of hay fever include nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy throat and eyes, watery eyes, headaches, sinus pressure, fatigue, wheezing, and coughing.
To alleviate hay fever symptoms, various medications are available, including antihistamines, decongestants, corticosteroid nasal sprays, leukotriene inhibitors, and immunotherapy. These treatments aim to block allergic responses, reduce inflammation, and help the body tolerate allergens through allergy shots. It is essential for individuals affected by hay fever to seek appropriate medical advice and treatment to manage their condition effectively.
